External Calls

Monitor the third-party APIs your services depend on

The External Calls page shows the outgoing HTTP requests your servers make to other services: payment providers, email APIs, internal microservices.

External Calls page with requests by status, response time, and the list of external services

Overview

  • Total Calls, Avg Response, P95 Response, and Error Rate
  • Requests by Status and Response Time over time
  • External Services: one row per domain, with the number of requests, 4xx and 5xx responses, average and P95 duration, and last call

Click a domain to see its own charts and its URL Patterns: calls are grouped by method and URL, with IDs and UUIDs replaced by placeholders (/orders/:id). Click a pattern to list its recent requests and open their traces.

Calls to your own services

A domain that belongs to another service of the project shows an Internal badge with the name of that service. Monocle samples calls to the domain and looks for a service of the project that received them in the same trace. The calls must carry the trace context. See Traces across services. Because detection relies on samples, a domain without the badge can still be one of your services.

What is counted

An external call is a client span with an HTTP method. It is grouped by the server.address attribute and its URL comes from url.template when set, otherwise from url.full. A call counts as an error when the response status is 400 or above.

Calls made from the browser are not listed here. Calls to databases are listed in Queries.
